Who am I? If you are curious, the answer to this question is here.
My name is Luxuan Zhang and I am a Chinese girl born in September 1999. My major is graphic design and I am currently studying at university. Next I will tell you about my study experience and some information about my personal interest in art for my major.
I am an international student from China and I studied at Beijing Institute of Fashion before coming to study in the UK. I am now studying Graphic Design at the University of Derby. If I were to describe myself, I would say I am a rather calm person, introverted and slow, but when we get to know each other I may show another side of me, I am usually lively, cheerful and positive in front of my close friends.
As for my style, I like images that are not realistic, I tend to be more abstract and add to my self-awareness. I prefer warmer tones to cooler tones, those bright, jumpy colours make me feel happy. I also like to add some traditional Chinese art to my work, such as calligraphy, paper cutting... my cultural experience brings a different style to my work.
Amongst all these artistic choices, I am more partial to painting and typography. First of all, I started to draw because I have been learning drawing since I was a child with my family who started a drawing education for children. As time went by drawing became part of me, so I chose to major in an art-related field at university. Typography is a field that I have been interested in for the last two years, and I have found that I like it since I did a school assignment in Beijing. The interweaving of different graphics and text is very interesting to me. Photography is also an art-related hobby of mine, and I prefer to photograph people rather than landscapes. People express so many emotions and feelings in my eyes that landscapes don't.
I admire designs that look interesting and I think it's important that the design is not just visual, but also that the audience feels a sense of interaction. One of my favourite designers, Kenya Hara, does a great job of this and many of his works use multiple senses of the audience very well.
Recently, thanks to the city lockdown, I have had more time to do what I love. I have started painting again, I have hardly picked up a brush in such a formal way to paint something since I graduated from high school, this time I have started again for no other purpose than to let it bring my life back to life and it has made me full and happy.
